National NonProfit Day is on August 17th. At Gesture, we have worked with over 3,000 nonprofit organizations to make hope happen with our fundraising and mobile bidding technology and will have helped raise over $500 million by year’s end. We wanted to take today to share about this celebratory day, hear from our employees on why they love working with nonprofit organizations and offer some tips on how nonprofits can increase donations by leveraging this day!



Let’s begin the celebration of this significant day by touching on the history of nonprofit organizations in the United States. Although some nonprofits are thousands of years old (such as Harvard College), most charitable organizations were founded within the past 30 years2. In fact, nonprofits are the most rapidly growing organizations in the world. Nonprofit organizations differ immensely in scope and scale from other types of organizations, which makes it difficult to determine exactly what nonprofits are, what they do, and how they do it. Nonprofits can range from informal organizations without employees to multi-billion dollar foundations with thousands of employees and members. Because of the many complex and diverse nonprofits working in every community, millions of lives are touched each day. It would be challenging to find anyone who has not been influenced in some way by a nonprofit organization, whether they knew it or not.

How organizations can benefit:

National NonProfit Day provides a notable opportunity for organizations to advocate their cause. Here are a few tips on how to effectively increase donations and awareness by leveraging National NonProfit Day:

  1. Create a social media strategy: Many nonprofits use social media to promote their organizations because it’s an easy way for people to show support for causes close to their hearts. You should increase the amount of content shared on social media and include information about how your audience can get involved and give to your cause.
  2. Use email to send reminders and donation opportunities: Use your email list or monthly newsletter to remind your supporters that National NonProfit Day is coming up. In these emails, you should provide your audience with ways to donate and interact with your organization. You might also include a set of promotional images or graphics focused on National NonProfit Day in the digital/email reminders. Send these notices up to a month in advance as well as the weeks leading up to National NonProfit Day.
  3. Thank your audience and donors: Although the day has ended, the work isn’t done yet. It’s critical to measure any engagement your organization received in response to the day (i.e. the number of donations, views, shares, volunteers, etc.). Next, update your social media channels and email newsletter thanking your audience for their participation and reporting on how successful the campaign was.


Utilizing these tips will contribute to your success on National NonProfit Day. These suggestions will increase your donor audience and overall donations as well as provide your donors with more ways to interact with your organization in the future.

National Cancer Survivor Day

National Cancer Survivor Day 2017 falls on Sunday, June 4th. Each year, this day is a day to honor those who have won their battle with cancer. This year is special because it marks the 30th annual day, and in the spirit of the day, Gesture would like to both celebrate and praise those who persevered and made hope happen. To the survivors who went toe to toe with countless rounds of radiation, contested and conquered chemo, and ultimately won the fight with the devastating disease that is cancer: we pay homage to you.

About National Cancer Survivor Day:

This day is a time when  “tens of thousands of people across the globe will gather in their local communities to honor cancer survivors and raise awareness of the ongoing challenges of cancer survivorship.” (NCSD 1).

We strive to make hope happen for all and we believe in the liberation that comes from the act of giving and the power of inspiration.At Gesture, we find a tremendous amount of inspiration in the stories of those who won the title of survivor. The survivor, the victor, has liberated his or herself through sheer fight, willingness, determination, and most of all, hope. And to that we congratulate and commend all.

“National Cancer Survivors Day presents an opportunity for all people living with a history of cancer to connect with each other, celebrate milestones, and recognize those who have supported them along the way. It is also a day to draw attention to the ongoing challenges of cancer survivorship with the aim of promoting more resources, research, and survivor-friendly legislation to improve cancer survivors’ quality of life” (NCSD 2).

We are fortunate enough to work alongside many cancer support centers and charity organizations in order to bring hope to their already hopeful communities. These great institutions contribute to keeping the hope alive in the hearts and souls of those who are faced with the battle against cancer. The children, the men, the women, the families, and the supporters of these organizations can attest to the power of inspiration through giving and sharing the stories of their survivors. We are overjoyed to extend our expertise to any and every organization. Organizations that support cancer research, cancer recovery, and survivorship among communities have found our technologies and assistance extremely helpful.

A few organizations we have the pleasure of working with are Cancer Kiss My Cooley, The St. Louis Men’s Group Against Cancer, and the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation.

Cancer Kiss My Cooley:

Cancer Kiss My Cooley’s 2017 KISS IT Gala raised $231,000 for their cause! They grant “Kisses of HOPE” which are special moments or experiences for pediatric brain tumor patients and their families. They’ve partnered with Gesture since 2015 and say: “Your assistance with our silent auction and raffle items brought in way more money than we have in years past, and we appreciate your assistance to raise money for our Kiss of HOPE™ program to help kids battling brain cancer. St. Louis Men’s Group Against Cancer:

The St. Louis Men’s Group Against Cancer has also been a long-time partner with Gesture, working with us to make hope happen since 2013. Their annual dinner started in 1980 and has run every year since. The implementation of new technology for the event wasn’t challenging at all: “the committee and guests all enjoyed the ‘new’ spirit you brought to our dinner. Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation:

Gesture is also lucky to partner closely with the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation which raises money to fight cancer through various fundraisers throughout the year. This year, their Cook-Off for Cancer raised over $1.1 million which will be donated to cancer research organizations as well as support children battling cancer and their families.

We encourage you to check out these organizations and the great work they are doing in their communities. Cancer isn’t something that can be fought alone; we need to fight it together.

Gesture has always instilled and fostered a positive attitude when assisting in the events at hand. We truly enjoy making things as easy as possible for both hosts and attendees. Making hope happen has become so much more than a slogan to us, it has become a way of conducting ourselves throughout our everyday life. The opportunity to take the stage and display that ideology through assisting you at your events is where we strive.

So in celebration of hope, we turn our thoughts and praises towards those survivors who won the fight against the devastation that cancer is known for. On this day we celebrate all people living with a history of cancer and call upon them to connect with one another, celebrate milestones, and recognize those who have supported them along the way. Gesture Observes Mental Health Awareness Month

Since 1949, National Mental Health Awareness Month (also known as Mental Health Month) has been observed in the month of May. During this month, organizations working to create awareness around mental health spread the word about mental health through word of mouth, the media, local events, and more.

One in five U.S. adults will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime and nearly everyone is impacted by mental illness affecting those they are close to. This month is a key time of year for organizations that take action on mental health issues in both local communities and on a national level to gather support and awareness.

Here are some ways that local and national organizations dedicated to helping those with mental illnesses can use this month as an opportunity to gain awareness of their organization:

  1. Use hashtags to reach out to those who are interested in your cause on social media. For Mental Health Month, use #BH365 (Behavioral Health 365) and #MHM2017 (Mental Health Month 2017) or #MentalHealthMonth. Tagging posts and photos will connect you to like-minded people who may be interested in donating to your organization or attending your next event!
  2. Create content that will both interest and help readers. As the experts on mental health, no organization is in a better place to advise on ways to approach someone with a mental illness or recognize warning signs than you. Use your expertise to create content that will be helpful to anyone in need of information as well as attract viewers to your website!
  3. Reach out to local news or media and offer/ask to participate in an interview. This will allow you to spread word about the importance of your organization’s work in the realm of mental health to a broad audience. You can also use this opportunity to put a plug in for your next/upcoming event!
  4. Encourage your staff and volunteers to share personal stories related to mental illness. At Gesture, we hear too often from organizations that one of the largest challenges they face is the stigma against mental illness and receiving help for it. If your staff and volunteer members feel comfortable, ask them to share with their friends, family, and/or followers why they’re dedicated to the cause.

Gesture makes it easier for organizations to focus on their important work in communities instead of focusing on fundraising logistics.

The 2016-2017 school year came fast, and so will your fall fundraiser! The Gesture team has prepared a fall event study guide to help you remember everything you’ll need to bump your fundraising grade from an “A” to an “A+!”

Fall Event Study Guide - 3 Months Out

□ Pick a venue

□ Determine seating/table availability and sponsorship opportunities

□ Pick a menu that caters to all of your guests needs – note allergies, vegetarians, etc.

□ Prepare program agenda for event

□ Create an appeal video to show your guests how their donations will make a difference – reserve AV equipment as needed

□ Finalize your auction items and have some fun promoting them on social media, in email campaigns and on your website

□ Send your special guests a personalized invitation – from your biggest donors to your speakers to your board of directors, a personalized invitation will go a long way

□ Put together committee

□ Decide on ticketing process/platform (Gesture announced an enhanced ticketing and registration process in August 2016!)

□ Impress your guests with awesome auction items by using Gesture’s 2016 Corporate Donation Guide (Remember that most corporations need at least 6 weeks notice!)

□ Pick a theme – create a printed brochure and event signage to match the invitation

How to Make Your Summer Event Shine

Make your supporters go “Oooo” and “Ahhh” during your next summer fundraiser! After partnering with thousands of non-profits across the country, the Gesture team has witnessed some great event ideas that added a bang to our partner’s fundraisers. Consider these tips when planning your next summer event to give it an extra pop!

  1. Keep the kids entertained. For events that bring out the whole family, like a 5k walk/run, it’s a great idea to have activities for the kids. Hold a mile race, have a craft tent, offer face painting, rent a bounce house, or even a rock climbing wall!
  2. Take advantage of the nice weather. Plan something a little more unique, like a block party with a live band and local food and drink vendors or a picnic with local food trucks. These additions to your event are sure to draw a crowd and generate positive PR for your organization.
  3. Partner with local companies. Don’t have a lot of time to plan a summer event? Piggyback off events already going on! For example, contact your closest minor league baseball team to see if you can sell tickets and receive some of the proceeds or throw out the first pitch. The event is already planned for you – all you have to do is market it!

With the goal of continuous quality and growth, Coalition for Children, Youth & Families continues to change kids’ lives through foster care and adoption!

This weekend is packed full of events and in Chicago both the Chicago Botanic Gardens and the Arthritis Foundation are hosting their big end of the year events.

Harvest Ball – The Guild of the Chicago Botanic Garden presents its Annual Harvest Ball on Saturday, September 19. The Chicago Botanic Garden in all its fall beauty serves as the backdrop for the Harvest Ball. With 385 acres of public gardens, 26 distinct gardens, four natural areas, and 80 acres of lakes, the Garden offers a unique location for an evening of dinner and dancing.

The black-tie garden party begins with a cocktail reception and silent auction at 6 p.m. followed by a dinner and live auction that features domestic and international packages.

arthritis foundFreedom of Movement Black Tie Gala – On Saturday, September 19th, 2015 at the Drake Hotel, the Arthritis Foundation will honor Aaron G Rosenberg M.D., F.A.C.S., Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, and a senior partner with Midwest Orthopedics at Rush with their Annual Freedom of Movement Award, recognizing his career accomplishments and dedication addressing the needs of arthritis patients and caregivers.

The Freedom of Movement Award is the largest fundraising event of the year for the Arthritis Foundation. It is an event that acknowledges leaders in the advancement of research and awareness for the management, prevention, and cure of arthritis, the most common cause of disability in the United States. The Black Tie Gala, now in its twenty-sixth year, is established as a special evening of recognition, attracting business, corporate and medical professionals.

Mobile Bidding Hits Nashville and Memphis

The state that is home to country music has boosted their performance in the charitable giving world. It’s All About Kids is a 501(C)3 non-for-profit corporation devoted to helping children with cancer and their families. We are a 100% volunteer organization.
